There is debate about whether the blank rune is valid or not, because it could be an addendum and not a part of the original Futharks. Whether the ancient Norse used a blank rune or not, the concept is one known to them and used by them. One cannot use Wyrd as a Magic rune in making bind runes (unless the idea that all possible futures start with the blank slate of Wyrd obtains) but it is useful in rune-casting for divination or answering questions. As a divination rune, it makes the statement that not everything is under our control, that there are forces and coming events that we can only react to, not initiate. This is the meaning of Wyrd. Fate is an interactive process between what happens and what we do about it. What happens just is and we cannot control events, but our future is only governed in a small part by what happens—a far greater part is our response. What we choose to do, how we choose to respond, the active path we choose to follow is what brings the outcome into being. Wyrd is the pathway in life we are meant to follow if we choose to be who we can. The Norns offer us chances, but we must accept them and bring them to fulfillment by our own actions. We start with a Wyrd of fulfillment and growth that we can follow to become our best selves and one of smallness and withering, a small hole that we can tamp ourselves into in a process of declining and forgetting. Our Wyrd can be a challenge, but it will always be something we can do if we try hard. |
